The Autism & Challenging Behavior Toolkit

Aligning Families and Clinicians Around Effective Responses to Autism-Related Challenging Behaviour

A free, evidence-based toolkit created by Board Certified Behavior Analysts to help families, RBTs, students, and clinicians respond to challenging behavior with greater clarity, consistency, and confidence across settings.

The Autism & Challenging Behaviour Toolkit is a free educational resource designed to give families and professionals a shared, ABA-informed framework for understanding and responding to challenging behaviour ethically and effectively.

It does not oversimplify behaviour.
It does not place blame on families or clinicians.
And it does not rely on rigid scripts that fall apart in real-time situations.

Instead, it offers a grounded, practical foundation that supports clearer communication, better alignment across roles, and more effective decision-making when it matters most.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this toolkit, you will be able to:

  • Understand challenging behaviour through an ABA-informed lens
Learn how learning history, environment, sensory needs, and communication influence behaviour, beyond surface-level explanations.

  • Respond more effectively during high-intensity moments
Prioritise safety, regulation, and consistency in ways that reduce unintentional escalation across home, school, and clinical settings.

  • Apply practical, ethical strategies with confidence
Use evidence-based approaches that are adaptable to real environments, while recognising when further assessment or professional support is needed.

About the Creators

Carolina Elizabeth Gonzalez, M.S., BCBA
Daniel A. Mendoza, M.S., BCBA, LBA

We are a husband-and-wife team of Board Certified Behavior Analysts and first-generation Latino professionals with extensive experience supporting individuals across the full spectrum of need.

Our work has included early intervention, adolescent and adult services, and highly complex cases involving severe aggression, self-injury, elopement, property destruction, and sensory-related behaviours. We have worked in homes, schools, clinics, centres, and specialised high-risk programmes.

Beyond clinical practice, we are educators and mentors. We have trained and supervised RBTs, supported clinicians through certification, taught graduate-level ABA coursework, and presented at conferences and professional panels.

At the heart of our work is a simple belief:
Effective behaviour support requires respect for the science and respect for lived experience.

Through Behavioral Analytics, we are committed to providing guidance that is evidence-based, practical, culturally responsive, and grounded in real-world application, so no family or professional feels alone in navigating complex behaviour.

Why This Toolkit Is Different

This is not a checklist.
It is not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
And it is not written from a distance.

It was created by clinicians who have spent years working directly with individuals and families navigating some of the most complex behavioural presentations, across real homes, schools, clinics, and communities.

The goal is not perfection.
The goal is alignment, clarity, and more humane, effective responses.

Who This Toolkit Is For
